Có lẽ với những bạn đang luyện Writing IELTS, dạng bài Discuss Both Views không còn quá xa lạ, tuy nhiên không phải ai cũng nắm được cách làm dạng đề này. Bài viết dưới đây sẽ cung cấp cho các bạn những kinh nghiệm để viết tốt một bài Discussion Essay của IELTS Writing. Dạng bài này yêu cầu bạn phải trao đổi, thảo luận vấn đề từ nhiều chiều, không hoàn toàn chủ quan như trong bài Argument Essay.
I. Cách xác định dạng đề Discussion
Hãy tham khảo 3 câu hỏi dưới đây và lựa chọn câu nào thuộc dạng Discuss Both Views.
- Computers are being used more and more in education and so there will soon be no role for the teacher in education. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
- Computers are being used more and more in education. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your own opinion. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your own opinion.
- Computers are being used more and more in education. Some people say that this is a positive trend, while others argue that it is leading to negative consequences. Discuss both sides of this argument and then give your own opinion.
Câu hỏi 1 thuộc dạng Opinion, ta có thể xác định điều đó nhờ mệnh đề: “To what extent do you agree or disagree?”
Câu hỏi 2 thuộc dạng Advantages and Disadvantages.
Câu hỏi 3 thuộc dạng Discussion, điều này thể hiện ở mệnh đề yêu cầu “Discuss both sides of the argument and give your opinion.” Đôi khi, mệnh đề này có thể được diễn đạt là “Discuss both views".
II. Câu hỏi mẫu trong đề IELTS
Sau đây là một số đề IELTS mẫu cho dạng bài Discussion này:
- A growing number of people feel that animals should not be exploited by people and that they should have the same rights as humans, while others argue that humans must employ animals to satisfy their various needs, including uses for food and research. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
- Blood sports have become a hot topic for debate in recent years. As society develops it is increasingly seen as an uncivilized activity and cruel to the helpless animals that are killed. All blood sports should be banned. Discuss the main arguments for this statement and give your own opinion.
- Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crime. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Không chỉ riêng Discussion Essay, hầu hết các đề bài IELTS Writing task 2 luôn có 2 phần:
- Phần background: (Giống nhau ở hầu hết các đề bài) nêu lên nội dung sẽ thảo luận.
- Phần yêu cầu: (Khác nhau theo từng loại essay – dấu hiệu nhận biết chính) yêu cầu chính của đề bài – phần in đậm nghiêng gạch dưới
Theo đó nếu yêu cầu đề bài là:
- Discuss both these views…
- Discuss both views…
- Discuss both sides…
Thì đó là yêu cầu của một bài Discussion Essay.

III. Cách viết bài Discussion trong IELTS Writing
Có hai cách tiếp cận dạng bài này. Bạn có thể bàn luận về hai ý kiến hoàn toàn khách quan ở phần thân bài và đưa ra ý kiến cá nhân ở phần kết bài. Cách thứ 2, bạn nêu ý kiến cá nhân ngay ở mở bài và support ý kiến của mình ở một đoạn ở thân bài.
Cách tiếp cận 1:
1. Mở bài - Introduction (Khoảng 2 – 3 câu)
– Introducing the topic.
– Giving background information and Narrowing the topic.
– Stating that both sides are good to some extent.
2. Thân bài – Body (2 đoạn văn, mỗi đoạn khoảng 5 – 7 câu)
– Paragraph 1: Side 1 Advantages. (about 2-3 Advantages)
– Paragraph 2: Side 2 Advantages. (about 2-3 Adavantages)
Lưu ý: Dù là Discuss nhưng bạn không nên đề cập đến Disadvantages vì thông thường Advantage của Side 1 sẽ là Disadvantage của Side 2. Ví dụ như Advantage của Traditional Food là healthy (tốt cho sức khỏe) thì Disadantage của Fast Food sẽ là unhealthy (không tốt cho sức khỏe).
Vì thế, nếu ở phần bàn luận về Fast Food bạn nêu ra cả Disadvantage sẽ có thể trùng lặp ý với Advantage của Fast Food.
3. Kết bài – Conclusion (Khoảng 1 – 2 câu)
– State that both sides are good in some cases/ both sides are important: Bạn phải tổng kết lại rằng cả 2 ý kiến trái chiều đều có những mặt đúng của nó hoặc đều quan trọng.
– Your opinion: Which side is better?: Sau khi tổng kết lại, bạn mới đưa ra ý kiến cá nhân: Ý kiến nào trong 2 ý kiến đã cho tốt hơn.
Ví dụ bài mẫu theo cách tiếp cận 1:
Some people believe the aim of university education is to help graduates get better jobs. Others believe there are much wider benefits of university education for both individuals and society.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
These days, more and more people are making the choice to go to university. While some people are of the opinion that the only purpose of a university education is to improve job prospects, others think that society and the individual benefit in much broader ways.
It is certainly true that one of the main aims of university is to secure a better job. The majority of people want to improve their future career prospects and attending university is one of the best ways to do this as it increases a person’s marketable skills and attractiveness to potential employers. In addition, further education is very expensive for many people, so most would not consider it if it would not provide them with a more secure future and a higher standard of living. Thus, job prospects are very important.
However, there are other benefits for individuals and society. Firstly, the independence of living away from home is a benefit because it helps the students develop better social skills and improve as a person. A case in point is that many students will have to leave their families, live in halls of residence and meet new friends. As a result, their maturity and confidence will grow enabling them to live more fulfilling lives. Secondly, society will gain from the contribution that the graduates can make to the economy. We are living in a very competitive world, so countries need educated people in order to compete and prosper.
Therefore, I believe that although a main aim of university education is to get the best job, there are clearly further benefits. If we continue to promote and encourage university attendance, it will lead to a better future for individuals and society.
Cách tiếp cận 2:
1. Mở bài – Introduction (Khoảng 2 – 3 câu)
– Introducing the topic.
– Giving background information and Narrowing the topic.
– Mentioning that both sides are good to some extent but at the same time, stating your opinion.
2. Thân bài – Body (2 đoạn văn, mỗi đoạn khoảng 5 – 7 câu)
– Paragraph 1: Side 1 Advantages. Ở đoạn này bạn nên nói về Advantages của ý kiến mình không chọn. Tuy nhiên, vẫn phải nhìn nhận vấn đề khách quan và nên dùng hiệu quả Impersonal Language ở đoạn này.
– Paragraph 2: Side 2 Advantages. Ở đoạn này bạn nên nói về Advantages của ý kiến bạn chọn ở mở bài. Bạn nên tập trung bàn luận ý kiến này hơn ý kiến ở paragraph 1 vì đây là ý kiến bạn ủng hộ. Bảo vệ ý kiến của mình ở đoạn gần kết bài thì sẽ dẫn đến kết bài tự nhiên hơn.
3. Kết bài – Conclusion (Khoảng 1 – 2 câu)
– State that both sides are good to some extent/ both sides are important: Bạn phải tổng kết lại rằng cả 2 ý kiến trái chiều đều có những mặt đúng của nó hoặc đều quan trọng.
– Your opinion: Which side is better?: Sau khi tổng kết lại, bạn khẳng định lại ý kiến cá nhân: Ý kiến nào trong 2 ý kiến đã cho tốt hơn.
Ví dụ bài mẫu theo cách tiếp cận 2:
Some people believe that studying at university or college is the best route to a successful career, while others believe that it is better to get a job straight after school.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
When they finish school, teenagers face the dilemma of whether to get a job or continue their education. While there are some benefits to getting a job straight after school, I would argue that it is better to go to college or university.
The option to start work straight after school is attractive for several reasons. Many young people want to start earning money as soon as possible. In this way, they can become independent, and they will be able to afford their own house or start a family. In terms of their career, young people who decide to find work, rather than continue their studies, may progress more quickly. They will have the chance to gain real experience and learn practical skills related to their chosen profession. This may lead to promotions and a successful career.
On the other hand, I believe that it is more beneficial for students to continue their studies. Firstly, academic qualifications are required in many professions. For example, it is impossible to become a doctor, teacher or lawyer without having the relevant degree. As a result, university graduates have access to more and better job opportunities, and they tend to earn higher salaries than those with fewer qualifications. Secondly, the job market is becoming increasingly competitive, and sometimes there are hundreds of applicants for one position in a company. Young people who do not have qualifications from a university or college will not be able to compete.
For the reasons mentioned above, it seems to me that students are more likely to be successful in their careers if they continue their studies beyond school level.
IV. Cách viết một số mẫu câu thường xuất hiện trong bài Discussion
1. Impersonal Phrases: Câu với chủ ngữ giả
Sử dụng câu với chủ ngữ giả sẽ ghi điểm trong IELTS Writing hơn là câu bình thường. Chúng ta sử dụng câu với chủ ngữ giả nhằm mục đích nhấn mạnh. Có thể tham khảo cách viết câu này qua những ví dụ cụ thể dưới đây:
– Some/many/most people | think/consider that…
Ví dụ: Many people think that fast food is very convenient…
– It is widely believed that…
Ví dụ: It is widely believed that eating fast food is not good for health.
– It is possible/probable that…
Ví dụ: It is possible that fast food will become much more popular in the future.
– It can be argued that…
Ví dụ: It can be argued that in some cases, fast food is better than traditional food.
– It has been suggested that…
Ví dụ: It has been suggested that people (should) not go out to eat too often.
– Opponents of … think/believe/claim that…
Ví dụ: Opponents of fast food believe that it is not good for health at all.
2. Phrases to list advantages: Câu liệt kê
