I. Phần mở đầu
Ngoài vốn từ vựng phong phú, các cấu trúc ngữ pháp chính xác, các collocations; các bạn thí sinh khi mới bắt đầu chuẩn bị cho mình những idioms để có thể làm câu trả lời của bạn được đánh giá cao hơn. Dưới đây là gợi ý cho các bạn thí sinh những idioms thông dụng mà các bạn có thể áp dụng cho phần thi IELTS Speaking của mình.
II. Các idioms cho phần thi IELTS Speaking
Phần 1 của bài viết gợi ý cho các bạn các idioms khá phổ biến và ví dụ cho phần thi IELTS Speaking:
1. Hit the ceiling: bỗng nhiên rất giận dữ
Ví dụ: Jack will hit the ceiling when he finds out the truth.
2. Bring down the house: làm cho khán phòng vỗ tay nhiệt liệt
Ví dụ: The show has brought down the house after it finished.
3. By the skin of one’s teeth: sát sao
Ví dụ: Harry got through the case by the skin of his teeth.
4. Make someone’s blood boil: làm ai đó giận dữ
Ví dụ: After hearing that story, it makes Troy’s blood boil.
5. Pay through the nose: trả giá quá cao cho một thứ gì đó
Ví dụ: This expensive dress forced me to pay through the nose for it.
6. Few and far between: hiếm gặp
Ví dụ: Sunny days have been few and far between this winter.
7. Lead somebody by the nose: dắt mũi ai
Ví dụ: Dean was led by the nose by his sister.
8. On the spot: gặp rắc rối
Ví dụ: I am always on the spot when working with Tim.
9. It never rains but it pours: Việc tốt và xấu thường xuất hiện cùng một lúc
Ví dụ: Everyone in my house is sick right now because it never rains but it pours.
10. On the edge of= In the edge of: trên bờ vực
Ví dụ: Rare animals are in the edge of extinction.
11. Pull someone’s leg: trêu chọc ai
Ví dụ: My brother’s pulling my leg when I feel sad.
12. The more, the merrier: càng đông càng vui
13. It’s strike somebody as/that a strange: lấy làm lạ
Ví dụ: It strikes me as a strange that Jay failed his exam because he’s such a excellent student.
14. High and low: tất cả mọi nơi
Ví dụ: I have been searching high and low for the book.
15. Take it amiss: khó hiểu
Ví dụ: Dean will take it amiss if I fail this exams.
16. Once in a blue moon: hiếm khi
17. Go to one’s head: Khiến ai đó kiêu ngạo:
Ví dụ: Too much success will go to her head.
18. Part and Parcel: thiết yếu
Ví dụ: Integrity is part and parcel of the job.
19. Spick and span: ngăn nắp, gọn gàng
Ví dụ: My cousin is wearing spick and span uniform.
20. Every now and then: thỉnh thoảng
Ví dụ: My family has a party every now and then.
21. The last straw: giọt nước tràn ly
Ví dụ: This was the last straw when Greg had forgotten this schedule.
22. Get the hand of something: nắm bắt được, sử dụng được
Ví dụ: It took me 5 times guiding to get the hand of using this machine.
23. Hard of hearing: bị lãng tai
Ví dụ: My grandpa is hard of hearing.
24. Keep an eye on: coi chừng
Ví dụ: I have to keep an eye my little brother when my parent go on their business.
25. Have a bee in one’s bonnet (about something): đặt nặng chuyện gì
Ví dụ: Nina has a bee in her bonnet about going to Japan.
26. At the eleventh hour: Vào phút chót
Ví dụ: Emma always turned her application at the eleventh hour.
27. Make believe: giả bộ, giả vờ
Ví dụ: Peter tries to make believe she was happy.
28. Sell/go like hot cakes: bán đắt như tôm tươi
Ví dụ: This products are sold like hot cakes.
29. Find fault with: Kiếm chuyện, chỉ trích
Ví dụ: My mom always find fault with me when she feel angry.
30. Off and on/ On and off: thỉnh thoảng
Ví dụ: My and her friends often go on and off to this luxurious restaurant.
31. Smell a rat: hoài nghi
Ví dụ: The time Hannah comes in, she smells a rat.
32. Sleep on it: Đợi trước khi đưa ra quyết định
Ví dụ: You have to think carefully and sleep on it before letting me know.
33. Down the drain: đổ sông đổ biển, vô ích
Ví dụ: It’s just money down the drain.
34. Fight tooth and claw/nail: đánh nhau dữ dội
Ví dụ: They fought tooth and claw to retain their shares of business.
35. Play tricks/Jokes on: chọc phá
Ví dụ: The kids always play jokes on their neighbour house.
36. All at once: Bất ngờ
Ví dụ: All at once, Jay begin feeling sick.
37. Blow one’s trumpet: bốc phét
Ví dụ: Sam always blows his trumpet to his class.
38. Make good time: hoàn thành chuyến đi nhanh chóng
Ví dụ: We made a good time.
39. Look daggers at someone: giận giữ nhìn ai đó
Ví dụ: Wayne looked daggers at all neighbours.
40. Be out of the question: Không thể được
Ví dụ: Bella can't do this, it is out of the question.
