Paraphrasing là một kỹ năng vô cùng quan trọng trong bài thi IELTS bởi nó có thể kiểm tra được cả năng lực từ vựng và ngữ pháp của bạn giúp tăng band điểm trong bài nói và viết. Dưới đây là danh sách cách paraphrase những cụm từ thường gặp trong đề thi IELTS nhé!
Parapharase là gì? Tại sao cần luyện cách paraphrase?
Paraphrase thực ra chính là một dạng bài tập quen thuộc với bạn từ những năm cấp 2, cấp 3 – Viết lại câu. Tuy nhiên paraphrase trong IELTS thì “thiên biến vạn hóa” hơn nhiều, nghe thì đơn giản nhưng để thuần thục kĩ năng paraphrase thì là cả một quá trình luyện tập. Thế nhưng “có công mài sắt có ngày nên kim”, luyện paraphrase thành thạo thì sẽ có lợi vô cùng nha:
Với phần thi Writing, dù là Writing Task 1 hay Writing Task 2 thì đều cần paraphrase lại đề bài như một cách mở bài hết, mà chắc chắn là bạn không thể “copy paste” đề bài vào bài viết của mình đúng không nào ^^
Để làm tốt bài Reading thì kĩ năng Paraphrase cũng rất quan trọng, vì rất hiếm khi người ra đề sẽ viết lại y nguyên ý trong đoạn văn vào câu hỏi, mà thường sẽ paraphrase lại. Không nắm chắc kĩ năng này, rất có thể bạn sẽ không tìm thấy đoạn văn chứa thông tin trả lời cho câu hỏi.
Trong phần thi Speaking cũng có nhiều đất “dụng võ” cho kĩ năng Paraphrase đấy nhé, giả dụ examiner hỏi bạn “Do you like reading books?” mà bạn trả lời “Yes, I like reading books” thì nghe sẽ khá chán đúng không, thay vào đó, có thể nói “Yes, reading books is my all-time favorite hobby”, nghĩa của câu vẫn tương tự mà cuộc nói chuyện sẽ tự nhiên hơn rất nhiều.
Với Listening cũng tương tự Reading, nội dung bài nghe đã được paraphrase lại nên để “bắt” được ý, bạn phải thật quen thuộc với kĩ năng này.
Tuyệt chiêu số 1: Sử dụng từ đồng nghĩa (Synonyms)
Phương pháp này là việc thay thế các từ đồng nghĩa vào câu để được một câu mới. Ta có thể xem ví dụ đơn giản sau:
More than half of the people who attended BC’s seminar thought it was great.
-> The majority of the people who went to BC’s seminar thought it was amazing
Đây là phương pháp paraphrase hay được áp dụng nhất, nhưng cũng là phương pháp “khó nhằn” nhất. Không phải chỉ cần thuộc nằm lòng nhiều synonyms là xong, mà quan trọng là phải biết áp dụng đúng lúc, đúng chỗ nữa. Vì có nhiều khi thí sinh nhầm lẫn giữa từ đồng nghĩa và từ có nghĩa tương tự, điều này khiến câu được viết lại có thể không truyền tải hết ý nghĩa của câu gốc.
Tuyệt chiêu số 2: Thay đổi trật tự từ trong câu
- Nếu câu có nhiều hơn một mệnh đề, bạn có thể đảo vị trí các mệnh đề với nhau:
If they are hard-working enough, most people can get good a good band score in IELTS
-> Most people can get good marks in IELTS, if they are hard-working enough.
- Với những câu có 1 tính từ và danh từ, ta có thể viết lại câu thành một mệnh đề tính ngữ:
Paraphrasing is one of the key skills needed to get a high score in IELTS
-> Paraphrasing is one of the skills needed to get a high score in IELTS that is key
Tuyệt chiêu số 3: Chuyển từ câu chủ động thành bị động và ngược lại
Đây có lẽ là một dạng viết lại câu khá quen thuộc đúng không nào, đây là cách paraphrase khá phổ biến, tuy nhiên trong bài thi IELTS nếu sử dụng thì nên kết hợp với việc thay từ đồng nghĩa (synonyms), thay đổi dạng từ... nữa bạn nhé ^^
People say that overpopulation is caused by poverty
-> Overpopulation is said to be caused by poverty
Tuyệt chiêu số 4: Biến đổi dạng từ (word form)
Watching a movie may help people to feel excited and satisfied.
-> Watching a movie may help people to feel excited and achieve a sense of satisfaction.
Một ví dụ khác về cách paraphrase trong bài IELTS Wring Task 1:
The chart shows the participation by young people in sports by gender in Great Britain in 1999.
-> The bar chart demonstrates how young people in Britain participated in sports in terms of gender in 1999.
Tuyệt chiêu số 5: Dùng chủ ngữ giả
People say LangGo is one of the best IELTS centre.
-> It is said that LangGo is one of the best IELTS centre.
Nếu muốn nhấn mạnh hơn, ta có thể viết lại như sau:
She liked the taste of Cappuccino the best among various types of coffee drinks.
-> It was the taste of Cappuccino that she liked the best among various types of coffee drinks

Đây là lỗi sai kinh điển của nhiều bạn khi viết bài khi luyện thi IELTS. Điều vô cùng quan trọng của writing IELTS đó là thể hiện sự khách quan, tránh tối đa dùng các đại từ nhân xưng như "I, we, you" hay "my, your, our". Vậy ta có thể thay bằng những từ nào?

Các bạn cực kỳ lưu ý là trên mạng có nhiều nơi gợi ý những từ như plummet, soar, skyrocket để mô tả sự tăng lên hoặc giảm xuống đột ngột. Nhưng mình đã tham gia buổi chia sẻ của chuyên gia từ British Council hồi tháng 3/2020 và cô đã khuyên rằng, KHÔNG NÊN dùng những từ đó mà hãy dùng cách tính từ và trạng từ kèm với các động từ ở mục 1 và 2 trên này nhé!

I. Paraphrase từ "spend"
1. To allocate money for something
- It is argued that the government should allocate more money for the education of science rather than any other subject.
(Người ta lập luận rằng chính phủ nên dành nhiều tiền hơn cho giáo dục về khoa học hơn là bất kỳ lĩnh vực nào khác.)
- We should allocate bigger budgets on the improvement in other sectors.
(Chúng ta nên phân bổ thêm nguồn ngân sách vào việc cải thiện những lĩnh vực khác.)
- The government could allocate their budget to other important sectors like education or infrastructure.
(Chính phủ có thể phân bổ ngân sách cho các lĩnh vực quan trọng khác như giáo dục hoặc cơ sở hạ tầng.)
2. To invest in something
- The cost of running and managing prisons is often costly as the government needs to invest much money on facilities and security.

(Ví dụ, gần đây việt nam đã chi hàng triệu đô la để tổ chức các lễ hội trên khắp đất nước để thể hiện bản sắc văn hoá của mình và những sự kiện này đã thu hút được một lượng lớn du khách.)
Lưu ý: 3 từ “allocate”, “invest” và “channel” mang tính vĩ mô nên chỉ được sử dụng cho những gì to tát như giáo dục, y tế…, không dùng để nói đến việc trong cuộc sống bình thường như mua đồ dùng hàng ngày hay mua quần áo đâu nhé!
II. Paraphrase "like, dislike"

- Am fond of ...Câu này thể hiện thích thú một điều gì đó trong một khoảng thời gian dài, và đến bây giờ vẫn còn rất thích nó.
- Am a fan of/ am crazy about ...Câu này thể hiện niềm đam mê, thích thú cực độ về việc hay một điều nào đó.
- Am interested in ...
- Am into ....Câu này thể hiện sự thích thú về một hoạt động hay một chủ đề nào đó
